Schneider Electric drives a more sustainable world
Schneider Electric uses Schneider Sustainability Impact (SSI) to measure its progress towards sustainability goals. |
Schneider Electric believes access to energy and digital is a basic human right. Our world is transforming rapidly, and our generation is facing a tectonic shift in energy transition and industrial revolution catalysed by accelerated digitisation in a more electric world. Schneider Electric is taking urgent climate action, driving digital transformation of energy management and automation for energy efficiency and sustainability. The goal is to build the path to fulfil the company’s commitment to go carbon neutral by 2030.
The EcoStruxure™ platform allows Schneider Electric to offer IoT-enabled solution that increases operational and energy efficiency, and thus reducing CO2 emissions. It gives extensive visibility and control over energy use, and thus empowering the company to pursue sustainability goals.
Recently, Schneider Electric transformed its 25-year-old industrial building into a state-of-the-art, award-winning, and energy efficient office building in Singapore. The aim was to make the entire building carbon neutral. The first office building to receive the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award in Singapore, the facility has reduced carbon emissions by 1,650 tons per annum since its official opening in March 2018.
The smart building, housing more than 1,400 employees in comfort, has 3,000 IoT-connected sensors that link with 1,100 devices. Data generated by these sensors is collected and analysed for real-time monitoring, analysis and informed decision making. The facility also has 270 workplace sensors, including occupancy and comfort sensors, to collect and track data at the dashboard. A comfort score will be ranked and used to evaluate the most efficient use of space and electricity within the building. In addition, photo sensors, motion sensors, and power sensors are installed to detect the intensity of light, control the air-conditioning and lighting, as well as provide real-time energy and power measurements across the office, respectively. Solar panels installed in the building have generated renewable energy to support 47 percent of the whole building’s monthly energy consumption (220Mwh).

Since the launch of BEAM Plus NB V1.2 in 2012, the rating tool has continued to evolve after taking into account feedback from the industry. The BEAM Plus NB V2.0 was hammered out as a result of the suggestions and comments collected over the past seven years as well as updated government guidance on the adoption of energy-efficient features and renewable energy technologies.
The upgraded BEAM Plus NB V2.0 is designed to provide practicable, clear and standardised criteria to assess the sustainability performance of green buildings. In particular, it now places more emphasis on “Health and Wellbeing”, which highlights human environmental quality. Another key assessment aspect added in the BEAM Plus NB V2.0 assessment is Integrated Design and Construction Management, embracing the adoption of an integrated design process that ensures the building can sustain its greenness throughout its building life cycle.
BEAM Plus New Buildings V2.0 is open for registration now. Know more at the Council’s website, and our previous coverage at GreenMAG Plus+ (Jul 2019 issue and Aug 2019 issue).

Exclusive Policy Luncheon initiated profound exchange among government officials and industry players
Key players from major developers and consultants joined the exclusive Policy Luncheon to discuss related green building and land supply policy with Mr Michael WONG, Secretary for Development, Development Bureau. |
This year comes to the third edition of the Policy Luncheon organised by the Council. Top management of major property developers, which are also Council’s Members, were invited to join the luncheon to discuss related policies with key government officials. This year, we have also invited a few renowned consultants to join as well!
We are very delighted to have Mr Michael WONG, Secretary for Development and Ms Bernadette LINN, Permanent Secretary for Development (Planning and Lands) of Development Bureau to join the luncheon. Mr WONG first mentioned that government is exploring the possibility of extending BEAM Plus practice to public works. He also shared direction on land supply and related development plan in maintaining an optimum use of land resources and upholding an effective land administration system.
We hope this Exclusive Policy Luncheon could be a valuable opportunity for Members, to understand more on government strategies and have direct dialogues to jointly foster Hong Kong’s green building development.
Mr Michael WONG and Ms Bernadette LINN had an in-depth sharing and interaction with Members during the luncheon with a common vision of building a greener Hong Kong! |
The HKGBC has organised an Exclusive Breakfast Gathering for our Member representatives on 9 September with the presence of renowned speakers Ms Lisa BATE, Chair of World Green Building Council and Prof. LAM Khee-poh, Provost's Chair Professor of Architecture and Building and Dean of School of Design and Environment of National University of Singapore.
Ms Lisa BATE shared with us the insights on green building development and strategies from global perspectives – boosting low carbon buildings while Prof. LAM focused on the projects he currently works on in Singapore and the strategies to create a well and green community.
Ms Ada FUNG, the Board Secretary and Director of the World Green Building Council and Director of HKGBC shared on Hong Kong’s participation in ‘Advancing Net Zero’ project, a WorldGBC global project, to promote and support the acceleration of net zero carbon buildings.
Almost 60 Member representatives joined us at this excellent learning and networking event and had a fruitful and enjoyable Monday morning!
Member representatives enjoyed the sharing by our renowned overseas speakers. |
The Hong Kong Green Building Week 2019 (HKGBW 2019), organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and HKGBC, and co-organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the Government of HKSAR has been successfully held on 21-22 September at CIC – Zero Carbon Park. Great numbers of general public had fun at our 2-day event during the weekend, and learnt about benefits of the Green Building towards the environment and our living.
Mr WONG Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, Ar. Stephen HO, Assistant Director – Industry Development & Estates Office of CIC, Ir Cary CHAN, Executive Director of HKGBC and HKGBW Ambassador Ms Sisley CHOI were invited to be the officiating guests to kick off the 2-day event with representatives of HKGBC Board of Directors, Standing Committee, and Supporting Organisations. During the Opening Ceremony, Mr WONG and Sisley shared their Green tips to the audience and encourage people to save electricity by different green practices.
Themed “Green Building Exploration”, guests held a magnifier to explore the buildings to find out their “Green features”. |
Nearly 150 organisations supported the Hong Kong Green Building Week this year. It was great to meet some of the representatives at the Opening Ceremony. |
On the first day, nearly 500 participants joined the first ever “Green Building Exploration Challenge” by visiting different green buildings at Kowloon East including Headquarter of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Energizing Kowloon East Office, Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Building, CITAC etc. to finish Green buildings related missions. Participants shared that they had learnt much on green buildings and the features, which significantly accomplished the Council’s key mission to promote green building messages to the mass public.
Various exciting activities at “Green Building Carnival” engaged a great number of mass public to discover what is green building. For example a Bus Tour, as sponsored by New World First Bus, was organised to bring visitors to travel around Kowloon East and discover the green buildings. BEAM Professionals stationed on the bus acted as ambassadors to introduce the green features of each building to the visitors while some of the buildings also opened and provided guided tours to the visitors.
Workshops, mini games and guided tours were arranged for visitors to learn green knowledge by using recycled building materials to create light ball, potted plants and more. There were also Green Bazaar and green stage performances to promote sustainable habits to visitors.
“Biz-Green Dress Day” was held on 5 September which drew many patrons’ attention and support for a greener workplace by wearing light yet professional to save energy through reducing air-conditioning consumption. A Mascot Tour of Hanson and Green Building Buddy was arranged on the same day to call for action. We received supports from not only office workers but also students and children!
Thank you again for all your support to make the Hong Kong Green Building Week 2019 a huge success!
