New World Development Integrates ESG Further and Announces New Sustainable Building Projects

 

New World Development (NWD) has published their Annual Report 2020 with a Corporate Sustainability section demonstrating their Environmental, Social, and Governance performance and good progress in achieving New World Sustainability Vision 2030 (SV2030) targets. Highlights include (1) a 22% carbon emissions intensity reduction compared to the FY2015 baseline, (2) implementation of building-level climate resilience improvement measures as per the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and (3) Creating Shared Value initiatives in the local community. 

 

 

New World Sustainability Vision 2030 references United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and NWD’s business priorities to curate a customer experience based on four pillars - Green, Wellness, Smart, and Caring.
 

 

NWD will engage stakeholders proactively in the redevelopment of the State Theatre.


Additionally, NWD has recently announced the launch of an architectural conservation project for the iconic State Theatre, a unique Grade 1 historic building located in North Point with 68 years of history. Driven by their SV2030, the conservation project will adopt their standardised sustainable building approach by referencing green building certification standards. This project also marks an incredible milestone in their longstanding interest in promoting arts and culture. Preservation of cultural heritage is one of the “Caring” initiatives in NWD, a key pillar under SV2030 that drives the Group in developing projects that create shared value for the communities. A team of local and international consultants with rich experience in heritage conservation has been assembled in order to preserve the true essence of the State Theatre.

Sino Group Announces Sustainability Vision 2030

 
Sino Group has announced its Sustainability Vision 2030 (‘SV2030’), a blueprint charting the course for 2030 and beyond. In line with the ethos of ‘Creating better lifescapes’, the SV2030 guides the Group’s sustainability strategies and efforts to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Sustainability is integrated into every aspect of operations of Sino as it strives to create long-term value for customers, employees, business partners, shareholders, investors and the broader community.  SV2030 entails Sino’s visions for crucial areas such as renewable energy, plastic reduction, green building certification and innovative solutions with specific goals to make a positive impact.

Key highlights of the Sustainability Vision 2030 include: 
 
  • To reduce greenhouse gas emission by 30% by 2030 from 2012 level
  • To reduce single-use plastic consumption by 50% across all business lines by 2022 from 2017 level
  • To generate 8,000,000 kWh of renewable energy between 2012 and 2030 
  • To achieve BEAM Plus certification for all of its new buildings in Hong Kong
  • To achieve WELL™ certification for all of its new buildings in Hong Kong
  • To increase training hours per employee by 50% by 2025 and 100% by 2030 from 2019 level
  • To improve the well-being of 5,000 less-resourced families

Co-organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the annual public event “Hong Kong Green Building Week 2020” will return virtually this year from 5 to 11 December. The theme of the 7-day campaign is “Green Buildings - TEAM UP for a Zero-carbon Future”. A series of online programmes will be launched on HKGBC's Facebook page. Special prizes will be awarded to audiences who watch the videos and give the best answer to the questions related to green buildings!

Opening Ceremony & TEAM UP Quiz Competition

Distinguished guests including Mr WONG Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment of the Government of HKSAR, Mr Ivan FU, Chairperson of Committee on Environment of CIC, Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC, and Mr Raymond WONG Ho-yin, the event ambassador will share low carbon living style with us. Mr KS Wong and Raymond will then team up with artists and students to participate in an exciting quiz game to test their knowledge about green buildings and carbon reduction.

It also encourages an open discussion of the importance of green buildings in alleviating global warming and the promotion of other sustainable lifestyles.

The World Sustainable Built Environment Online Conference 2020 was held successfully!


The World Sustainable Built Environment Online Conference 2020 (WSBE 2020) with the theme of creating clear links between the most relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the built environment was successfully held on 2 to 4 November 2020! 

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) and Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) continued the official support as a Gold Sponsor and led the organisation of several prime speaking opportunities for Hong Kong as a whole which includes Keynote Session, Panel Discussion and Hong Kong Session. 

On Conference Day 1, Mr Michael WONG, Secretary for Development of the Government of HKSAR, Mr CHAN Ka-kui, Chairman of CIC and Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC were the Speakers of “Keynote Session 2” and shared the State of the Sustainable Built Environment in Hong Kong. Mr WONG Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment of the Government of HKSAR joined a high-level Panel Discussion with other city representatives on the same day.
 

 

 

The “Hong Kong Session” was also held on Conference Day 1. With the theme of “Leading Hong Kong case studies: Advancing Net Zero in a high-rise high-density built environment”, Hong Kong’s contribution and excellent projects on “Advancing Net Zero” were showcased to the world.

Mr Donald CHOI, Moderator of Hong Kong Session and Director of HKGBC, introduced 3 pioneers to share their unique experience, including “Sustainable Built Environment & Lifestyle in InnoCell” by Mr Simon WONG of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation,  “Fostering harmony among urban, rural and nature through sustainable infrastructure - The Sai Sha Road Widening Works in Sai Kung” by Mr Eddie TSE of Gammon Construction Limited, and “Creative Transformation of Taikoo Place Redevelopment” by Dr Raymond YAU of Swire Properties Limited. 

Mr Ivan FU, Chairperson of Committee on Environment of CIC, and Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC also joined the speakers in the panel discussion to explore the challenges faced in advancing net zero for Hong Kong’s built environment with delegates around the World.

 

 


On Conference Day 2, HKGBC and BEAM Society Limited (BSL) co-organised a panel discussion about “Accelerating the Sustainability Transformation of Existing Buildings in Hong Kong”.

The session started with Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC, by delivering the opening remarks. Mr Andy YEUNG from Hongkong Land, Ms Tracy WONG Harris from Hong Kong Green Finance Association, Dr Calvin Lee KWAN from Link REIT, Prof. KK LING from Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Ir Dr Cary CHAN, Executive Director of HKGBC and Ir CS HO from BEAM Society were invited to join the panel discussion. Panelists shared their views on how to accelerate the sustainability transformation of existing buildings with the aid of BEAM Plus, especially the initiative of volume certification; and how BEAM Plus can be served as external certifications in financing for green retrofitting. The session ended with the closing remarks by Ms Ivy LEE, Chairperson of BEAM Society.

 

 

Several key players in Hong Kong also presented their sessions or papers at the Conference to jointly showcase the contributions of Hong Kong industry players in driving for a sustainable city and community. 

 

The Hong Kong Report on the State of Sustainable Built Environment 2020 (HK Report 2020) has already been launched on 2 November in parallel with the opening of the WSBE 2020. Infrastructures can be green!

 
Infrastructures serve us every day and support our daily needs. Have you ever thought that they are green buildings too?

Serving over 20 million people in 2019, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Port - Passenger Clearance Building achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings. Baffle ceiling shading devices and skylights effectively bring natural light into the PCB whilst reducing thermal heat gain. At another Platinum-rated infrastructure facility - Sewage Treatment Plant of the Liantang/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point Site Formation and Infrastructure Works, large-scale solar panels are installed to generate electricity by renewable energy.

More, the government office buildings are now green buildings too! West Kowloon Government Office achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings. Energy efficient water-cooled chillers are installed. There is low-e glass on the façade as well, effectively reducing heat absorption. Hence, energy can be saved while a quality indoor environment can be maintained.
