Swire Properties is Paving the Way towards Net-Zero Emissions
Swire Properties continues to work on their long-term decarbonisation goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
To reach the Company’s decarbonisation ambition, Swire Properties became the first real estate developer in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in December 2020 to commit to the Business Ambition for 1.5°C, launched by the Science Based Targets (SBTs) initiative in partnership with the United Nations Global Compact. The Company is now ramping up their approved science-based targets* to align with the 1.5°C trajectory of limiting global warming, in paving the way to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu became powered by 100% renewable electricity in 2020.
In reviewing the year of 2020, the Company has made steady progress towards their carbon reduction targets, despite the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19. The carbon intensity (tonnes of CO2e/m2) of the Company’s Hong Kong portfolio and the Chinese mainland portfolio decreased by 44.1% and 42.2% respectively, compared to the baseline. What’s more, Swire Properties has recently reached a significant milestone with their Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu development became powered by 100% renewable electricity generated by hydro, solar and wind power in 2020. Moreover, all of the Company’s new development projects in 2020 achieved the highest ratings in green building certification, while 97% of all existing buildings are certified green buildings.
To tackle the Company’s upstream emissions and support the procurement of low-carbon construction materials for new development projects, Swire Properties has established low carbon procurement specifications for building materials such as concrete, reinforcement bar and structural steel, facilitating construction contractors and supply chain partners to increase the use of recycled materials with lower embodied carbon.

*The Company commits to reducing scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% per square metre by 2025, and by 52% per square metre by 2030 – from a 2018 base year. The Company also commits to reducing scope 3 GHG emissions from downstream leased assets by 28% per square metre by 2030 – from a 2018 base year, and from capital goods by 25% per square metre by 2030 – from a 2016-2018 base year. Swire Properties’ approved SBTs align with the pathway of limiting global warming to below 2°C.
Chinachem Group Publishes Inaugural Sustainability Report
Chinachem Group published its first Sustainability Report, detailing the sustainability commitments, management approach and performance of the Group, including the property management subsidiaries and Nina Hospitality, during the period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020.
With a view to increasing the Group’s transparency, Sustainability Report 2019-2020 is prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards: Core option, and with reference to the Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting Guide in Appendix 27 of the Rules Governing the Listing of Securities on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited.
Published under the theme of “Creating a Liveable and Sustainable City”, the Report reflects the Group’s long-standing commitment to shaping a liveable and sustainable community in Hong Kong. With the Triple Bottom Line in mind—People, Prosperity and Planet, the Group endeavours to formulate a Sustainability Development Framework working towards realising the United Nation’s 17 wide-ranging Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Assessment 2021 has commenced! As an Industry Partner of GRESB since 2020, the Council endeavours to integrate different schemes in the Assessment and offer support to its corporate members, including developers and asset management companies, in completing the GRESB Assessment.
The investor-driven GRESB Assessment provides an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) benchmark and reporting framework for real estate investments in the globe, and evaluates material issues in the sustainability performance of real estate investments in the aspects of corporation and property portfolio. Currently, the Council’s schemes - BEAM Plus and HK BEST, providing certifications to buildings on their sustainability and energy performance, are recognised under the indicators of the GRESB Assessment.

New Town Development Starts with Green Utilities
More and more utility facilities embrace green building designs nowadays! Queen’s Hill Substation has recently achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings.
Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, attended the BEAM Plus Certification Ceremony and unveiled the BEAM Plus Platinum Certification Plaque at Queen’s Hill Substation with Mr William MOCATTA, Chairman of CLP Power. The contribution of the Substation to the sustainable built environment has been recognised in Mr CHEUNG’s remark.
Queen’s Hill Substation supports the new town development in the New Territories North along with the integration of sustainable building designs. The open and low-rise building design allows effective utilisation of natural ventilation and daylight. Water consumption has been adequately reduced by adopting the underground rainwater recycling tank and the automatic drip irrigation system. Photovoltaic panels are also widely installed on the green roof as a source of renewable energy for the operation of the irrigation system.
