[Hongkong Land] Empowering People for a Greener Future

Hongkong Land has undertaken proactive and impactful measures towards long term sustainable growth, as detailed in its newly release of the 2020 Sustainability Report. The report details key climate mitigation strategies and resilience measures, which are based on a comprehensive climate risk assessment in line with recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

All commercial buildings of Hongkong Land in Hong Kong and Singapore achieved the highest rating of green building certifications – including the BEAM Plus Existing Building Platinum rating for all 12 buildings in its Central Portfolio. The Group has also reduced its carbon emissions by 38% compared with 2008 for its Central Portfolio, while avoiding 290,000 tonnes of CO2e from 2008-2020 – equivalent to the global warming reduction potential of 12.7 million trees.  Energy intensity was reduced by 14% and water intensity was reduced by 17% in the past year across all properties.  A solar photovoltaic system generated 12,000kWh for the Central Portfolio, and 1,300 tonnes of materials were recycled among all regions.

As part of its continuing support for the development of sustainable capital markets in the region, Hongkong Land has secured its first sustainability-linked loans worth US$1.9 Billion with lenders in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand. These loan agreements are linked to the Company’s environmental, social and governance performance, and will build on Hongkong Land’s investments in renewable energy, waste and water management.  Meanwhile, the Group’s first Green Bond raised US$500 million, at a coupon rate of 2.25% per annum with a 10-year maturity.

Under the refreshed brand purpose inspire: aspire, the Company launched the HK$100 million Hongkong Land HOME FUND in November 2020 establishing a series of multi-year initiatives that aspire to benefit future generations by fostering a more inclusive society. The Company has also contributed to 36 charitable programmes benefitting underprivileged groups in 2020.

Rising to the challenge of COVID-19, Hongkong Land’s swift response included protective measures for employees, tenants, customers and the general public. To minimise the risk of infection, the Company implemented a full range of sanitisation and preventive measures across all its properties, and also provided financial assistance, medical protective equipment, food items and other resources to communities in need.

Hongkong Land has supported the people of Hong Kong for more than 130 years, throughout numerous unprecedented challenges - from global conflicts to economic recessions and even pandemics. Hongkong Land will continue to inspire, support, and empower the society of today, so that together they can aspire to a better tomorrow.

Let’s Embrace Green Building and Decarbonise in One Step!

Co-organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the annual public event “Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021” will be held this year from 25 September to 1 October. The theme of the campaign will be “Embrace Green Building – Decarbonise in One Step”. Through participation in the HKGBW 2021, the public will gain deeper understanding on the importance of building decarbonisation, and adopting low-carbon lifestyle to contribute to carbon neutrality.

The promotional video will be broadcast on major TV channels starting from 1 September 2021. The video features two main characters with a big grey ball on each of their bodies, symbolising carbon emission. Through the journey from 2021 to 2050, buildings successfully decarbonise and carbon neutrality could be realised in 2050.

The video will also be available on the event webpage and the Council’s Facebook Page. Stay tuned!

Biz-Green Dress Day is one of the major events which is tailor-made for office workers and will be held on 8 September (Wednesday). The two mascots, "Hanson" and "Green Building Buddy", will visit various offices to promote "green" clothing habits, in an attempt to reduce air-conditioning consumption by wearing light and breathable attire, thereby achieving energy saving and carbon reduction. The video highlights of Biz-Green Dress Day will be uploaded to the Council’s website and Facebook page on 27 September!

“A-Z Green Building Decarbonisation Card”

To educate the public about building decarbonisation, the Council is launching a series called “A-Z Green Building Decarbonisation Card” to bring out low-carbon habits with the 26 English letters. Integrating Green Facilities with Nature

Funeral facilities in Hong Kong mainly focused on functionality with less consideration to the needs of users and the environment. However, modern columbaria tend to integrate with nature for a peaceful and tranquil environment.

Achieving Final Platinum in BEAM Plus New Buildings recently, the Tuen Mun Tsang Tsui Columbarium is occupied with extensive vegetation up to 40% of the site area. Green roofs are widely applied in the project, with greenery occupying over half of the total roof area. The rooftop greening effectively reduces the heat island effect and reduce the demand for indoor cooling by lowering the temperature of the heat-absorbing surface. As the site was an ash pond, the construction at the site is able to retain the habitat and biodiversity over the area.

As another facility serving the public, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Substation achieved achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings. The vertical greening on the exterior brings us a pleasant environment and integrates with nature.
