AECOM - Building a Sustainable Community with Greenery

Sustainability is the core value of AECOM. The company focuses on the environmental, social and governance impact of its business, which is demonstrated in its projects at Anderson Road.

The projects cover two areas—lower and upper portions of the Anderson Road Quarry (ARQ) area:

Located at the lower portion of Anderson Road Quarry area, On Tai Estate is a green public housing development and home to about 21,500 people. The Public Rental Housing Development at the estate (Anderson Road Sites A and B) was completed in 2018.

Micro-climate studies were done to optimise the overall layout and positioning of the buildings on-site. The project consists of nine residential blocks from 30 to 33 storeys high with landscaped gardens and recreational spaces for the community. These green spaces connect the buildings and create wind corridors for better ventilation and natural light. At-grade planting, vertical greenery and green roof also help cool the environment and reduce the heat island effect within the site. Besides, 5-Dimensional (5D) Building Information Modelling (BIM) that incorporated time and cost was adopted in addition to traditional 3D BIM, allowing for more accurate forecast and resources planning.

On Tai Estate was certified with a Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings for its social, economic and environmental sustainability approach in project design and construction.

Located at the upper portion is the Development of ARQ Site. The Quarry has served Hong Kong’s construction industry since the 1950s, supplying asphalt, stone and concrete to the city. After ceasing all major operations in 2017, the government began reimagining 40 hectares of the former quarry into a sustainable and liveable housing community so as to cater for Hong Kong’s growing population.

The overall project adopted the concept of blue-green infrastructure, for instance, creating artificial flood attenuation lake, underground stormwater storage tank, green roofs, infiltration planter and trial of the permeable paver for reducing surface runoff to drainage systems. Centre to the proposed lake park is a planned artificial flood attenuation lake, which will be the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The artificial lake is designed to catch water runoff and mitigate flooding, while providing irrigation for the amenity area surrounding the lake.

Aiming to rejuvenate the Quarry site, the lake and the surrounding park will create a suitable habitat for species as well as raise public awareness on biodiversity.

Industry Ready Programme – Collaboration with City University of Hong Kong

The Industry Ready Programme was first established by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited in 2018 and the Programme successfully provided out-of-classroom training and internship to students. In view of this, CityU further enhanced the Programme and expanded the scope and partnered with seven professional bodies including the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC). A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony took place online on 14 January 2021 and Mr WONG Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, was invited as an honourable guest to deliver a speech. Ir Dr Cary CHAN,  Executive Director of HKGBC, was the representative of HKGBC signing the MOU under the witnesses of Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC.

Our Partners:

HKGBC is one of the MOU partners and the MOU was signed during the online ceremony.

Industry Ready Programme is fully supported by professional bodies in the industry, aiming to enhance students’ employability.

In the collaboration with CityU on the Industry Ready Programme, the HKGBC provides out-of-classroom training to students of School of Energy and Environment (SEE) of the University, broadening their job knowledge and enhancing their practical work skills. The HKGBC fully supported the Programme by providing retro-commissioning (RCx) training to their students. The first “Industry Ready Programme: RCx Training for Undergraduate Engineering” was successfully held in June 2020. The course included fundamental concept of RCx and content of a standard Retro-commissioning (RCx) Training for RCx Practitioner (Level 2). Students who completed the training and passed the examination could apply for registration of RCx Practitioner (Level 2) upon fulfilment of the related working experience requirement of the RCx Training and Registration Scheme after graduation.

HKGSA Publicity Campaign - Recognition to the Green Malls and Shops in Town

Facing the unprecedented challenge brought by COVID-19 in 2020, the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance (HKGSA) Members had put immense effort in heightening hygiene measures to fight against the pandemic in order to restore consumers’ confidence. Meanwhile, they had also strived to implement different green strategies, incorporating sustainable practices into their daily operations.

In recognition of HKGSA members’ dedication in maintaining a hygienic and green shopping environment throughout the pandemic period, a publicity campaign was launched by the HKGSA at the end of 2020. Collaborating with ViuTV, “Smart and Green Shopping”, a series of 12 episodes of 3-minute TV segment stories was produced and broadcast on ViuTV. The segment stories were also promoted on other lifestyle social media reaching out to a broader spectrum of audience.

The segment stories took the audience to different HKGSA malls and shops to find out how their diversified green strategies, from different perspectives, such as management’s commitment, collaboration with tenants, public education and advanced disinfection solutions, contributed to building a sustainable green environment. In 2021, HKGSA will continue to promote green shopping concepts and sustainable practices to the retail industry and public, as well as to support the green practices implemented by its members in order to foster Hong Kong to become world’s greenest shopping environment.

Green Commercial Buildings in Times of Pandemic

Though the pandemic has kept us apart from where we usually work, the green commercial buildings get prepared for welcoming us back and safeguarding our health and wellbeing. With extensive landscaping spaces and satisfying indoor environmental quality, a comfortable working environment is created for staff to gather, work and collaborate. Recent examples of green commercial buildings are K11 ATELIER King’s Road, FTLife Tower and Central Plaza Annex that have been certified with Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings.

Management is also an important part of green building throughout the building life cycle. Through measures in energy management, equipment upgrade with higher energy and water efficiency, monitoring of indoor air quality, etc., good management practice demonstrates how the sustainability principles are incorporated into building operations and maintenance. Recently, Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Energizing Kowloon East Office attained Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings, while Prosperity Millennia Plaza and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Fung Ling Memorial Buildings have achieved Excellent grade in Energy Use Aspect of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings Selective Scheme.

There are now more than 230 certified projects exhibiting at BEAM Plus Online Exhibition. Visit NOW and learn more about them!
