As a leading energy provider in Hong Kong, Towngas helps clients to achieve sustainable building objectives through the application of advanced energy efficiency technologies. Hong Kong’s humid climate causes mould growth, undermining indoor air quality (IAQ) and leading to issues such as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). In a bid to enhance customer comfort and safety, businesses have taken precautions to improve IAQ and prevent the transmission of the coronavirus. To help clients to achieve this objective, Towngas has been promoting the use of desiccant dehumidification, which offers precise control on humidity while reducing the cooling load on air-conditioning systems by eliminating the need to further lower indoor temperature for dehumidification purposes.

Its recent cooperation with Henderson Land Development integrates a desiccant wheel into a primary air-handling unit to form an Integrated D-PAU. Combining the Integrated D-PAU with renewable energy from solar collectors, the environmentally friendly design not only improves the quality of air but also dehumidifies it. This system is deployed fittingly at H Zentre, the first development in Hong Kong to prioritise wellness and health. In an effort to combat the pandemic, UV light is also installed into the Integrated D-PAU to sanitise the air. Together, the measures result in excellent IAQ for medical centres in the building.
The Integrated D-PAU applies an innovative technology integrating standard PAU components with a desiccant wheel, hot water heating coil and germicidal UV light, delivering cooling, dehumidification and sanitisation through a single compact unit. Further energy savings are achieved through integrating solar collectors with gas water heaters to generate heat that dries the desiccant wheel and regenerates its dehumidification capacity. With its innovative and energy saving elements, the project has attracted international attention and received the Innovative Energy Project of the Year from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). Its timely contributions are also recognised by the Hong Kong branch of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (iMechE) with the Best Project Award (New Design in Covid-19 Age).

Co-organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the opening ceremony of the annual public event “Hong Kong Green Building Week (HKGBW) 2021” was successfully held on 25 September at The Mills. Distinguished guests including Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, Mr Ivan Fu, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment of CIC, and Mr Cheung Hau-wai, Chairman of the HKGBC officiated the ceremony and kicked off the event in a refreshing way. Around 80 industry stakeholders attended the ceremony and witnessed the official launch of this flagship event.
HKGBW 2021 Promotional Video
The promotional video was presented to explain how green buildings reduce carbon emissions with interesting plots. The video featured two main characters with a big grey ball on each of their bodies, symbolising carbon emission. Through the journey from 2021 to 2050, buildings successfully decarbonise and carbon neutrality could be realised in 2050.
Opening Ceremony
In the opening ceremony, the officiating guests shared the latest decarbonisation solutions from the Government and the industry. To echo the theme “Embrace Green Building – Decarbonise in One Step”, they put on giant shoes made of recycled materials and took a step forward, symbolising the organisers’ common goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 in collaboration with the Government, industry and general public.

After the announcement of HKGBW 2021 programme details, Mr Wong Kam-sing led the audience to take a group photo with a "0" gesture, meaning different parties would work together and contribute to a "zero" carbon built environment.
The ceremony was followed by a VIP Session of “Expert-Guided Tour” which was guided by the design team of The Mills and BEAM Pro. The guests strolled through The Mills in this guided tour and learnt about its various green building designs.
Green Building Game Tour
On 25 and 26 September, all sessions of “Expert-Guided Tour” were also completed with great success. Hundreds of participants of the tours acquired green building knowledge with guidance of BEAM Pro at International Commerce Centre (ICC), Kowloon City Sewage Pumping Station No.1 and The Mills, and completed the decarbonisation missions on the game website.
Besides, the "Audio-Guided Tour" will continue to open until 8 October. Biz-Green Dress Day Highlight Video
To recap the Biz-Green Dress Day held on 8th September, the Council received record-breaking support from more than 150 organisations this year. The two mascots, "Hanson" and "Green Building Buddy", visited various offices to promote "green" clothing habits, in an attempt to reduce air-conditioning consumption by wearing light and breathable attire, thereby achieving energy saving and carbon reduction. Through interactive games, the Council shared ”Biz- Green” tips on office decarbonisation with office staff! International Conference on Advancing Net Zero - Accelerate the Decarbonisation of the Built Environment
With COP26 coming up and the vibrant momentum around the world to gear up for achieving carbon neutrality, decarbonising the built environment, which takes up 40% of global carbon emissions, is of utmost importance. The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) together with the WorldGBC and other counterparts are at the forefront to accelerate the agenda of net zero buildings across the sector.
Organised by HKGBC, International Conference on Advancing Net Zero, Hong Kong’s first international conference of its kind, will take place from 23 – 26 November 2021.
Themed “Decarbonising High-rise, High-density, Sub-tropical Cities”, the Conference aims to enhance the knowledge of Hong Kong’s building and construction professionals, as well as those from other parts of the world, on the latest concepts, trends, strategies and technical solutions to decarbonise and advance towards a net zero and sustainable built environment in a high-rise, high-density, sub-tropical city context.
Over 60 renowned local and international speakers from green building councils, building and construction industry, academia and the Government of the HKSAR will share their insights, latest trends and case studies in advancing towards net zero throughout the four days of Conference. The Conference is supported by the WorldGBC, Green Building Councils in the Asia Pacific Region, Construction Industry Council and numerous Supporting Organisations which share the same vision on this net zero journey.

BEAM Plus Data Centres Rating Tool has been Officially Launched
Co-organised by Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited, the official launch ceremony of “BEAM Plus Data Centres” was successfully held on 9 September 2021. Over 100 guests joined the launch ceremony, with Mr WONG Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment and Mr SIT Wing-hang, Alfred, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology as the Officiating Guests.
Since the launch of BEAM Plus in 2012, the rating tool has continued to evolve in meeting demand. As a customised green building assessment tool for data centres, the design of “BEAM Plus Data Centres” is based on their unique features, which is the first-ever rating tool tailored for a specific project type. With a high demand of power consumption for servers and cooling, the credit requirements have been reviewed to align with the characteristics of data centres and contribution in sustainable development. The assessments emphasise in energy efficiency enhancement and green management implementation.
BEAM Plus New Data Centres (NDC) and Existing Data Centres (EDC) are now open for registration. You may learn more at the Council’s website.

Having achieved Platinum Rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings, Skyline Tower has installed sensors to monitor water quality and indoor air quality, for the sake of creating a healthy and comfortable shopping environment for office users. Towngas Headquarters continue to perform strongly in sustainability and obtained Platinum Rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings. The management team measures vibration in multiple locations to ensure that large machines will not affect the working environment in the building.
Apart from maintaining a good indoor environment, New Buildings are also committed to reducing electricity consumption. A few blocks away from the Towngas Headquarters, K11 ATELIER King's Road is getting through a Life Cycle Assessment. Structural materials of the building consume low embodied energy, resulting in achieving Platinum Rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings. Another BEAM Plus project that achieved Platinum Rating, Harbour East, is equipped with sensors in the artificial lighting system, sensors can turn off the lighting when an area is unmanned, thereby saving energy.
