Schneider Electric Calls to Embrace Digitisation to Accelerate Sustainability and Efficiency at Innovation Summit Hong Kong 2022

On November 8, Schneider Electric successfully hosted sustainability-focused dialogues during its Innovation Summit Hong Kong 2022. Through keynotes, executive talks, panel discussions, and expert learning sessions, over 500 industry leaders, partners, customers and colleagues learned how digitisation and electrification can drive business resilience as well as shape a carbon-neutral Hong Kong. They also had the opportunity to explore Schneider Electric’s latest digital solutions.

For Schneider Electric, shaping a more digital and electric world is the way forward amid the growing global energy and environmental challenges.

Jean-Pascal TRICOIRE, Chairman & CEO of Schneider Electric opened the conversation on the value of “digitisation + electrification”. In his global keynote, he explained how this equation can help companies maintain sustainable business operations today and in the future.

Jonathan CHIU, President of Schneider Electric Hong Kong also prompted businesses to work together in leveraging digital energy to drive sustainability and efficiency for Hong Kong. He shared the city’s sustainability landscape and practical insights for achieving its carbon neutral goals.

Building on these climate-positive solutions, Pankaj SHARMA, Executive Vice President – Secure Power Division of Schneider Electric expounded on the concept of “Electricity 4.0” and discussed how creating green and smart energy, particularly for data centers, can accelerate our transition to a more sustainable business economy.

Simon NG, CEO of Business Environment Council presented preliminary results from their latest sustainability research, and shared different corporate approaches for realising a smarter, low-carbon Hong Kong.

To offer more concrete examples on how businesses are supporting Hong Kong’s 2050 decarbonisation targets, Schneider Electric also invited local industry leaders for an all-star CEO Panel, including Cally CHAN, General Manager of Microsoft Hong Kong and Macau, T K CHIANG, Managing Director of CLP Power Hong Kong, Donald CHOI, Executive Director & CEO of Chinachem Group, and Laurent PELLETIER, CEO of Veolia Hong Kong.

The event also zeroed in on digital innovations that are transforming buildings and data centers during its two expert learning sessions.

Joining the session on creating sustainable and people-centric buildings were Cary CHAN, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Anthony PAU, Deputy Director (Head of Group Service Delivery) of Hang Lung Properties, and Raymond YAU, General Manager, Technical Services & Sustainable Development of Swire Properties.

Participants also gained insights for efficiently designing and running digitised data centers from Paul EVANS, Executive Director – E&M & Chief Technology Officer of Gammon, Brian GROEN, President, APAC of Vantage Data Centers, Eric SIN, Executive Director, Project Management, China Region of WSP, and Andrew SYLVESTER, Head of Sales – International & Greater China Regions, EcoStruxure IT Line of Business, Secure Power of Schneider Electric.

Insights from Arup’s Race to Resilience Asia Event Series: What’s Most Needed for Building Climate Resilience?

Prior to COP27, Arup organised a series of ‘Race to resilience’ events, online and in-person across Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Singapore. Renowned speakers from across industries and sectors looked into topics ranging from flood management to inclusive design and transport strategies, shared their insights, experiences and what they think is most needed to work towards a climate resilient Asia. Watch the recordings to get inspired.

Here are some key takeaways:

Cities are at the forefront
Both the challenges and solutions to climate mitigation and adaptation lie within our cities. We need to bring diverse stakeholders together to share their experiences and approaches to local action and identify what is needed to empower local and regional state and non-state actors.

Nature-based solutions are critical to build resilience
Nature-based solutions are critical in improving cities’ ability to manage water and floods. Water sensitive urban design, integrated flood control planning and decentralised infrastructure and utilisation of digital tools are all key components of future water strategies.

Participatory low carbon design
Rapid urbanisation sets to intensify challenges such as a widening rich-poor divide, disaster risk and pollution. Participatory low carbon design and planning approaches should be used to uncover opportunities and actions in enhancing access to services, employment, and education for equitable economic growth.

Nurturing sustainable transport strategies
Transport is major contributor to carbon emissions and pollution, especially through people’s dependency on private cars. Cities need to consider how sustainable means of transport should be enhanced through the use of innovative solutions such as digital tools and Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept.

The overwhelming positive feedback to the series is a strong confirmation on the pivotal role designers, planners, engineers and sustainability consultants can play.

“My Green Space” Student Competition 2022-23 - Call for Submissions!

The HKGBC has launched the biennial “My Green Space” Student Competition 2022-23. Coming to its 9th edition, the Council is delighted to have the first Sole Sponsor of the Competition, Sino Group joining hands with us in promoting green building knowledge to the younger generation. Ultimately, the Competition aims to nurture students into pioneers in promoting green buildings and sustainable development in our community. 。

This year, the theme of the Competition is “Striving towards Carbon Neutrality – Net Zero Built Environment”. Students are encouraged to showcase creative ideas on how the master planning, designs, features, facilities and strategies of green buildings and their neighbourhoods, could drive the decarbonisation of the built environment.

Registration for the Competition is now available online until 31 Dec 2022. The Competition welcomes local Primary, Secondary and Tertiary students to join. This year, it also expands to Tertiary Students in the Greater Bay Area, hoping to encourage idea exchange on net zero strategies with Mainland China and facilitate our carbon neutrality journey.

Spread the Competition information to your friends and family to help create a greener built environment for our city!

For more details of the Competition, please visit the Competition website.

Green Building Skills Upgrading Training is on the Go!

Designed by the HKGBC, the Skills Upgrading Training series aims to give participants continuing education in a wide spectrum of green building subjects. Unlike traditional CPD webinars, the programme is more in-depth in content and is held on weekends, so that practitioners can make better use of their time for personal development.

The first round of this programme was completed in February this year. Due to the overwhelming response, a second round began in August 2022 and will continue until the end of 2023.

Mainly taught by experienced lecturers from the School of Energy and Environment of the City University of Hong Kong, the programme offers a large variety of subjects including IAQ, acoustic and lighting engineering, applied solar energy in buildings, solid and hazardous waste management, energy efficient buildings, building carbon footprint assessment, sustainable urban planning, social impact assessment, climate change, and more. Representatives of the BEAM Society Limited also lecture on subjects related to BEAM Plus credits. Each online course is conducted on two Saturday mornings and corresponds to six CPD hours. Participants completing eight or more courses are eligible to receive a “Comprehensive Certificate”.

The fifth course – Lighting Engineering – will be held on 17 and 31 December and is now open for registration. Interested parties are welcome to click here to register.
