Stakeholder engagement is also pivotal. With the theme of 'Embracing Wellbeing • Excellence in Sustainable Built Environment', the Award Presentation Dinner of Green Building Award 2023 (GBA 2023) jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) was held on 3 November 2023 with over 500 distinguished guests, including government representatives, developers, construction companies, consultants, property management companies, representatives from educational and professional institutions, attending to celebrate with all the Award Winners! The event was graced by the presence of Ms Bernadette LINN, JP, Secretary for Development, The Government of the HKSAR cum Honorary Advisor of GBA 2023 Jury Panel as the Guest of Honour.

The Green Building Award 2023 was honoured to have Ms Bernadette LINN, JP, Secretary for Development, The Government of the HKSAR (2nd left), Sr Kenneth YUN, Chairman of the GBA 2023 Organising Committee and the Professional Green Building Council (1st left), Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairman of the HKGBC (2nd right), and Ar. Joel CHAN, Chairman of the GBA 2023 Scientific Committee (1st right) joining the Award Presentation Dinner as officiating guests and sharing with audience their visions on the green building development in Hong Kong.

 

GBA 2023 received an overwhelming support from the industry with a record-breaking number of 147 nominations. Among the 117 Finalists, 68 Award Winners were announced which included 9 Pioneer Awards, 16 Grand Awards, 35 Merit Awards and 8 Special Citations on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. All of them truly demonstrated their dedication and achievements in going beyond the conventional practice, stretching their boundaries in advancing sustainability, and accelerating Hong Kong’s development into a city that provides wellbeing for all.

Below is a list of the distinguished Winners of the Green Building Award 2023 in each category, including Winners of the Pioneer Award for Green Building Leadership, the Grand and Merit Award for projects, and the Special Citation on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
 

Guest of Honour Ms Bernadette LINN, JP, Secretary for Development joined the Organisers and the renowned speakers to congratulate on the success of the Conference.

With the theme of "Pioneering an Inclusive Net-Zero Future for Hong Kong", the Chinachem Group Sustainability Conference 2023, organised by the Chinachem Group and co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council, was successfully held on 13 November at the Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West. The number of on-site and online participants was over 50% higher compared to the previous year's conference.

In alignment with the Government's Climate Action Plan 2050, which sets out the vision of "Zero-carbon Emissions· Liveable City · Sustainable Development", Chinachem Group Sustainability Conference 2023 aimed to explore innovative ways to accelerate Hong Kong's transition to a more inclusive, carbon-neutral future. Sixteen international and local speakers from government and academia, as well as from the architecture, technology, gerontology, and finance sectors, together with professional bodies and environmental advocates, were all invited to share their expertise and insights on policymaking, Hong Kong’s carbon market, green construction and design, partnership for impact, and youth perspectives.
 

Chinachem Group Sustainability Conference 2023 has seen an increase in attendance of over 50% compared to last year's conference.

The Conference was graced by Guest of Honour, Ms Bernadette LINN, JP, Secretary for Development, The Government of the HKSAR, who made the Opening Remarks. "The government will continue to actively reduce carbon emissions through smart, green and resilient strategies, and formulate measures in three aspects, namely planning and urban design, infrastructure, and smart mobility," said Ms LINN. "Green building practices will become increasingly important in improving our built environment. When discussing sustainable building works, we must include Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) as one of the innovative high-productivity construction methodologies. In recent years, we have spared no efforts to promote the wider adoption of MiC to expedite housing supply. MiC can uplift work efficiency by reducing site work processes, site labour, and construction period. It can also enhance sustainability and improve site safety. Thanks to Chinachem's efforts in spearheading the adoption of MiC building."

In the morning session, Ms Audrey NUGENT, Director of Global Advocacy, World Green Building Council, enlightened the crucial aspects of sustainability, offering invaluable insights into the transformative power of policy. 

Mr WONG Chuen-fai, JP, Commissioner for Climate Change, Environment and Ecology Bureau, The Government of the HKSAR, emphasised that climate change is a global issue requiring urgent action from all corners of the world. 

Mr Ken CHIU, Head of Carbon & ESG Products, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, highlighted HKEX's commitment to creating a low-carbon, climate-resilient global economy by supporting a vibrant sustainable finance ecosystem.

The voices of youth activists, Ms Carly LEUNG, Development Director, V'air, and Ms Jasmine SIU, Committee, Hong Kong Youth for Climate Action, further highlighted the challenges we face in the realm of climate action.

Focusing on the future development of Hong Kong, the sustainability planning of Hong Kong's Northern Metropolis and Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands were introduced by Ir Michael FONG Hok-shing, JP, Director of Civil Engineering and Development, The Government of the HKSAR. 

Valuable knowledge about the latest technological advancements in safeguarding the wellbeing of construction workers and residents was also offered by Ir Dr Conrad WONG, BBS, JP, Vice Chairman, Yau Lee Holdings Limited. 

The morning session concluded with a panel discussion entitled "Constructing a Sustainable City – Vision, Technology & People" which was skilfully moderated by Professor Christine LOH, SBS, JP, Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. 

In the afternoon session, a number of overseas Speakers offered insights on how to embrace diversity and build inclusive communities. Ms Kimberly Lewis INKUMSAH, Executive Vice President, Equity, Engagement and Events, IWBI (International WELL Building Institute) from Washington, USA, and Mr Lee SAUERWALD, Executive Director, Corporate Services, Uniting Communities Incorporated from Australia, broadened the audience’s horizons on workplace equity and creating a sustainable and inclusive society. 

Regarding the problems faced by existing buildings in energy efficiency and carbon reduction, new trends and technology in retro-commissioning and retrofitting were shared by Dr WEI Qing-peng, Deputy Director, Building Energy Research Center, Tsinghua University.

The event host, Ar. Donald CHOI, JP, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Chinachem Group, also provided practical insights on building partnerships with tenants, customers, and stakeholders to create an inclusive environment in Hong Kong. 

Dr Edward LEUNG Man-fuk, President, Hong Kong Association of Gerontology, shed light on the role of facilities management in fostering an age-friendly living environment.

The afternoon panel discussion was moderated by Professor WONG Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Chairman, Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation. Issues related to climate change were also discussed in this session.

The Conference was concluded by Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairman of HKGBC. In his Closing Remarks, he called on industry leaders in the green building, utilities, construction, green finance and development sectors to unite with the rest of the community to create and energise society. He emphasised  that a transformative approach to policy and action is the key to achieving a net-zero community and creating an inclusive future for Hong Kong.
