The Hong Kong Report on the State of Sustainable Built Environment 2024 is Now Calling for Submissions!
The World Sustainable Built Environment Conference 2024 (WSBE24) will take place online from 12 to 14 June 2024.
The Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) have jointly organised Hong Kong's participation in this world-renowned global conference since 2014. For this year's event, the CIC and the HKGBC are once again a Gold Supporter, the highest tier of support. This creates a range of speaking opportunities for the Hong Kong delegation, including a Plenary Keynote Session, Plenary Roundtable Sessions, Paper Sessions, and more. Our high-level involvement demonstrates our continued commitment to showcasing Hong Kong as a world leader in green building development, as well as the outstanding achievements of the Hong Kong Government and the local industry in fostering a sustainable city.
The Hong Kong Report on the State of Sustainable Built Environment 2024 (HK Report 2024) adopts the theme of "Innovations Towards Net Zero: Building Sustainable and Resilient Urban Environments". It will be released in an electronic format alongside the WSBE24. Published every three years, the HK Report 2024 aims to showcase the excellence of Hong Kong's built environment at a glance, highlighting the joint efforts of various sectors of society, including the Government, industry, academic sector and general community, as demonstrated through various projects and initiatives. The Report will be widely distributed during WSBE24 and via various channels of the CIC and the HKGBC.
We cordially invite representatives from all relevant sectors to seize this valuable opportunity and contribute details of their leading sustainable development projects, innovative green building solutions, unique experiences, and success stories for possible inclusion in the HK Report 2024, thus enabling them to be shared with industry players worldwide. The submission deadline is 20 March 2024 (Wednesday).

Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2023 Shopping Malls and Shops Join Hands to Build a Greener Shopping Environment
The "Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2023" Presentation Ceremony, funded by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), was held successfully at the CIC-Zero Carbon Park on 2 February 2024 to recognise the industry's outstanding green performance. More than a hundred guests attended the Ceremony to witness the remarkable contributions made by shopping malls and shops in promoting a green shopping environment in Hong Kong throughout the past year.
The Ceremony featured Guest of Honour Ms Theresa WU King-yan, Assistant Director (Municipal Solid Waste Charging) of the Environmental Protection Department, The Government of the HKSAR. During her speech, Ms WU shared valuable insights with the audience regarding the Government's operational preparations for the forthcoming municipal solid waste charging policy.

To promote best practice sharing among industry practitioners, Mr Maurice KONG, Director of the Institute of Dining Professionals, and Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP, Executive Director of the HKGBC, facilitated two insightful sharing sessions with representatives from the winning shopping malls and shops. These sessions included a discussion on the operation of green dining, the environmental measures in green malls, and the meaningful green collaborations initiated between the winning mall and its tenant.
Representatives from the winning malls and shops shared the challenges encountered and the key success factors in implementing sustainable development measures during the sharing sessions.
In addition to the existing awards for "Green Mall of the Year", "Green Shop of the Year" and "Excellent Green Product Advocator", a new collaborative award category was also introduced this year. The "Collaborative Project of the Year (Circular Economy)" and "Collaborative Project of the Year (Behavioural Change)" awards aim to recognise innovative and creative collaborations that mobilise stakeholders to achieve sustainability improvements in one of the two designated themes.

Looking ahead, the HKGSA warmly invites even more shopping malls and shops to demonstrate their commitment to environmental sustainability through various green practices in daily operations, and join hands with the HKGSA to build a greener shopping environment and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

BEAM Plus: Moving into a New Era of Global Applications
BEAM Plus, the most widely used green building rating tool in Hong Kong, is moving into its 28th year of operation. The success of this scheme can be traced back to its beginning in 1996, when the first two rating tools for new and existing office buildings, known as HK-BEAM, were derived based on an international scheme, namely the UK's Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). Over time, the rating tools have undergone continuous updates, taking technological advancements and international trends into consideration. Subsequently, the tools were reviewed against other international rating systems and underwent a significant transformation to "BEAM Plus" in 2010. Since then, BEAM Plus has garnered over 2,500 project registrations. With BEAM Plus also being used in developments outside Hong Kong, these registrations represent an increasingly diverse range of buildings.
Currently, we are developing a generalised version of BEAM Plus, which can more conveniently be applied to projects outside Hong Kong. It is hoped that this new version will better serve the Greater Bay Area and the global building industry.
Developers with development projects or investment properties outside Hong Kong are still encouraged to apply the current version of BEAM Plus to their buildings. To date, there have been numerous successful application cases, as shown in the table below. The assessment body is ready to offer tailored advice or related technical support (e.g., Credit Interpretation Requests) to project applicants where necessary. Forerunning projects that are the first to apply BEAM Plus in a specific city or region may also receive special fee concessions.
