Schneider Electric Innovation Summit Hong Kong 2021: The Path to Sustainability
Schneider Electric is hosting the virtual “Innovation Summit Hong Kong 2021” on 11 November 2021. Industry experts and thought-leaders will address global climate challenges and share how to reduce emissions effectively to decarbonise the world’s economy through keynotes, panel discussions, strategy talks and expert learning sessions. The summit will also unveil the latest digital and sustainable innovations and solutions.
Speakers Highlights
There is a pressing need to act and adapt to achieve climate goals. Innovations in technology and solutions make the path to sustainability more accessible. Jean-Pascal TRICOIRE, Chairman & CEO, Schneider Electric, will highlight how digitisation and electrification will achieve greater sustainability and efficiency for all.
As Hong Kong gears up for carbon neutrality before 2050, accelerating digitisation is needed for driving greater efficiency and decarbonisation. Jonathan CHIU, President, Schneider Electric Hong Kong, will explore how today’s digital technologies can help organisations achieve their business and environmental goals.
Accelerating our efforts towards a net-zero economy is more crucial now than ever. Discover the different sustainable strategies and perspectives that can bring our net-zero ambitions to reality with Giuliana AUINGER of Schneider Electric, Calvin Lee KWAN of Link REIT, Vincent CHENG of Arup and Joshua WONG of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels.
The new normal has significantly altered the lives of people. With an estimated 90% of our time spent indoors, buildings need to become more sustainable, resilient, hyper-efficient, and people centric. Luis D’ACOSTA of Schneider Electric and Steven CHARLTON of Perkins & Will will share their vision for recovery with all-digital and all-electric retrofitted buildings of the future.
Join Schneider Electric on the path to a more resilient and sustainable future.

InnoCell, Hong Kong Science Park
Aligning with the Hong Kong government’s commitment to be carbon-neutral before 2050, Leigh & Orange (L&O) has placed great emphasis on developing design strategies that minimise embodied carbon and operational energy, by using passive design strategies, parametric modelling as well as computer simulations to develop the optimal engineering solution. These tools help analyse and compare embodied carbon impacts for design options and aid the cross-discipline collaboration process to optimise overall project performance.
L&O recently obtained the highest Platinum rating under the BEAM Plus rating system, HKGBC’s green building assessment tool for Hong Kong, on three projects:
- InnoCell - BEAM Plus NB [v1.2] Final Platinum 2021.
InnoCell is a smart living and co-creation space offering 509 bed spaces to local and overseas incubatees and start-ups at Hong Kong Science Park. Green and open communal spaces form a significant part of the design, and are subtly incorporated to promote and facilitate a healthy lifestyle and to foster social cohesion.
InnoCell is the epitome of innovation in construction. It is also the first high-rise steel Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) building in Hong Kong. The use of MiC reduced construction time by around 38%, while the carbon emission during transportation was reduced by 75%, as the adoption of cargo ships for mass delivery significantly diminished the transportation fuel consumption. Similarly, on-site air pollution (particulate matter) and non-inert waste was dramatically lowered compared to traditional cast-in-site constructed building by 50% and 60% respectively.
- Chung Chi Student Development Complex, The Chinese University of Hong Kong - BEAM Plus-NB [v1.2] Provisional Platinum 2021.
Two old buildings on Chung Chi Campus are redeveloped into new student activity areas while the idea is implemented in a student-oriented and environmentally friendly way, the traditional values of Chung Chi College are also preserved.
The new Complex is designed to encourage walkability in the campus. Different forms of openings and platforms are introduced around its perimeter for promoting interaction and enhancing bonding between the Complex and its nearby natural environment. Moreover, the buildings are also designed to enhance the utilisation of natural lighting and wind for comforting the internal area, with support of different green elements at different floors.
As a redevelopment project, inheriting the cultural elements and values from the old buildings, in terms of material selection, façade design and circulation arrangement, are the key considerations for the Complex design.
- Jockey Club i-Village, HKUST - BEAM Plus-NB [v1.2] Provisional Platinum 2021.
This pioneering student residence has been designed to the highest sustainability standards through the use of highly adaptive sustainable and smart technology to provide an environmentally friendly and smart campus development.
The new building sits on a sloping site spanning approximately 25m of level difference from the base to the top. The roof line has been strategically developed into a socially animated circulation thorough-fare to create spontaneous communal interaction and encourage a stronger campus culture.
The form of the building has been developed to be a site optimised configuration through the use of digital tools to allow simultaneous considerations of numerous site parameters such as the site set back, terrain levels, existing soil nails and sightlines. The internal spaces were also digitally encoded to allow layout tests driven by functional optimisations and proximity to daylight.
L&O is delighted that five projects, across four different categories, have been shortlisted in the Hong Kong Green Building Award 2021:
- InnoCell ;
- Jockey Club i-Village, HKUST ;
- Relocation of New Territories West Regional Office and Water Resources Education Centre of Water Supplies Department to Tin Shui Wai;
- Hong Kong Quarantine Camps (Quarantine facilities at the JPC Permanent Activity Centre at Pat Heung, and Penny’s Bay Phase IIIA); and
- Expandable Housing by Modular Integrated Construction, a collaborative multi-disciplinary research study with Polytechnic University DISI.
The above recognition highlights the firm’s continued commitment towards a sustainable built environment, and we are committed to delivering designs that directly respond to the impacts of global climate change.
Every Step Taken Marks the Successful Completion of Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021
The successful integration of physical and online elements could especially be shown in one of the highlights - “Green Building Game Tour”. The educational tour, combining knowledge and entertainment together, allowed participants to learn about the concept and design of Green Building through completing the online and offline carbon reduction tasks in six different exemplar green buildings in Hong Kong. In addition to expert guides, two special guests - Terence Lam Ka-him, the singer-songwriter and Bonnie Wong (Ah Jeng), the Disk Jockey were invited to be our audio guides to spice up the Game Tour.
We have attracted the public to step into the green buildings and observe with their own eyes, the next mission is to plant the concept in everyone’s mind. In order to integrate the concept of Green Building into normal life indeed, a series of “A-Z Green Building Decarbonisation Card” was launched, associating the letters A to Z with BEAM Plus and other green lifestyle concepts. As our slogan says, “Decarbonise in One Step.”, and yet there is still a long path ahead to transform the city into a greener built environment. We will keep working on promoting green buildings, hope you could also join hands with us in the future.
Thanks to the great support of the Government of the HKSAR, Green Building Partners, Supporting Organisations and all the participants, "Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021" had completed with great success. The Council would like to express our gratitude to all the parties and organisations that assisted in completing this event. See you all next year!
To facilitate property buyers to distinguish the green ratings of residential properties, the Council has launched a webpage to provide information on BEAM Plus-certified residential properties. Canadian International School of Hong Kong L6 Cafeteria also achieved Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Interiors with its wide adoption of environment-friendly materials. The brand-new flooring, ceiling and wall materials make use of eco or recycled products. Making use of green materials not only reduces the impact on the environment, but also lessens carbon emissions during exploitation, transportation and production, helping to alleviate the crisis of climate change.
